The Norman A. Wiggins School of Law

The Law School Receives a New Name

The trustees of the university announced on September 22 that the university's Law School would officially be named the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law in honor of Campbell's President, Dr. Norman Wiggins, who has been president of Campbell since 1967. The announcement was made at a dinner at Raleigh's Marriott Hotel. Campbell trustee chairman Clyde Rhyne of Sanford made the announcement to some 350 guests at the dinner which was held in honor of Dr. Wiggins and his wife, Millie, both graduates of Campbell. Rhyne read a citation prepared by the trustees which acknowledged Wiggins' efforts in establishing and developing the Law School.

"Let the word go out that from this day forward, the Law School at Campbell University will forever be known as the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law," said Rhyne.

The program also included the presentation of a painting of the Law School to Dr. and Mrs. Wiggins by well-known North Carolina artist Allen Montague, Jr. of Raleigh. Montague is a 1968 graduate of Campbell. Also presented was a "20-year report" on the Wiggins years at Campbell. The 60 page report, printed in magazine format, was compiled by Phillip Kennedy, retired public information director at Campbell.

At the conclusion of the dinner, Fayettesville attorney Willis Brown announced a $150,000 grant from the Cannon Foundation to be used for the planned addition to the Law School. The Cannon grant will be added to a $350,000 grant made last May to the Law School campaign fund by the Jefferson Pilot Corporation of Greensboro.

Excerpts from The Prospect, October 1988

In Honor and Gratitude

In November 1988, the school was renamed the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law in honor of Campbell University's third president. According to the 1991 Pine Burr, "the change in name was an act of gratitude to Dr. Wiggins for his dedication in establishing and developing the Law School."

Dr. Wiggins made the following comment at the dinner announcing the name change: "Millie and I know all too well that when you see a turtle on top of a fence post, you can rest assured it didn't get there by itself. And if we're on top of the fence post tonight, it's because many of you put us up there."
