Campbell College Gets Set for 2nd Law School Class

June 18, 1977

BUIES CREEK -- With the first year of Campbell College's new School of Law behind them, officials at the Southern Baptist institution here are already gearing up for the next class of lawyers-to-be. Admissions director Tom T. Lanier said Friday that students were being accepted into the second law class and a large number had been placed on the waiting list. The school has already confirmed over half its quota of students for next fall, but Lanier declined to disclose how many had been accepted.

It is expected that law school officials will hold the line close to the 97 students who entered the program last year. The initial cutoff in 1976, set at 80, before first-class enrollment settled at 97 law students.

Those assigned to the waiting list do not include pre-law students enrolled in the  school's summer program, Lanier said. The summer school students are competing for positions in the fall class and, based on certain criteria, could be directly accepted into the program, or assigned to the waiting list, he said.

"This program was designed to give the applying law school students an opportunity to perform in an uncontrolled setting while we study their ability in a campus environment," said Lanier. "It is also an excellent orientation for what would be ahead of them if they are accepted."

The summer school students will be watched for their performance in class, the grades they achieve, and their potential as attorneys under Campbell's basic design to train legal practitioners for the rural South. Other factors in determining who will be accepted, Lanier said, include background, undergraduate grade point average, and Law School Admission Test Scores.

1977 - 2L Year

The entering class of 1977 totaled 98 students. Combined with returning 2Ls, Campbell Law School had a total of 185 students. The law school added four new faculty members, including a visiting professor of law, and added training opportunities for second-year students to prosecute misdemeanor cases under the supervision of the district attorney's office in courtrooms in Lee, Harnett, Johnston, Wake, and Cumberland counties.

The median age for the student body was 26. Enrollment of Women increased 40%. The school awarded 19 partial scholarships and research assistantships.
