Research Help

Reference librarians work with students to help locate information and identify and obtain relevant resources. They are available for one-on-one research consultations and also offer legal research workshops on a wide range of subjects and resources. For reference assistance, contact Caity Swift (919-865-5871) or Adrienne DeWitt (919-865-5873).

Reference librarians may:

  • help patrons locate law library resources
  • instruct patrons in the use of library materials and electronic resources
  • suggest appropriate resources and research strategies
  • look up readily available information, such as legal citation verifications
  • assist patrons with locating resources not found in the law library collection
  • refer patrons to other libraries or institutions for materials

Reference librarians may not:

  • conduct legal research on patron's behalf
  • interpret the law
  • provide legal advice
  • read statutes, cases, court rules, or definitions over the phone

E-mail service is available for simple, direct questions (such as citation verifications, source recommendations, etc.). You may also call the library to request reference assistance. However, telephone assistance is limited by the availability of staff.
