Civil Rights and Police Reform

BJS is the primary statistical agency of the Department of Justice. It is one of the thirteen principal federal statistical agencies throughout the Executive Branch, agencies whose activities are predominantly focused on the collection, compilation, processing, or analysis of information for statistical purposes.

The Citizens Police Data Project (CPDP.co) is a tool for holding police accountable to the public they serve.
Citizens Police Data Project (CPDP) takes records of police interactions with the public – records that would otherwise be buried in internal databases – and opens them up to make the data useful to the public, creating a permanent record for every CPD police officer.

CSP collects and publishes state court caseload data from the courts of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam.

The reports below present statistics on race and ethnicity compiled from the New York City Police Department's records management system. Crime Complaint Reports contain information on the crime victims' race and ethnicity as recorded by the officers or precinct clerical staff interviewing the victim or complainant. The Crime Complaint Reports also contain the victim’s description of any suspects who were not arrested. Arrests made by the responding or investigating officers are recorded as part of the booking process and contain race and ethnicity information for the arrested suspects.

The Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics brings together data from more than 100 published and unpublished sources about many aspects of criminal justice in the United States. Since 1973, the project has been located at the University at Albany, School of Criminal Justice, and compiled and managed by staff at the Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center in Albany, New York.
